Syria remained part of the Roman and then Byzantine empires until the 7th century, when the Arabs took it over and established the Umayyad Empire. Syria was one of the most important Roman provinces providing food, military might and notable emperors to the Roman Empire. Equally, many monuments in Syria were built during the Roman Period.
