Damascus Citadel is located on the north western corner of the Old City forming part of its ancient wall. Its fortifications date back to the end of the 12th century during the reign of Salah Eddine.Further fortifications were added in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods.Although it is built on flat grounds and is not as overwhelming as other citadels in Syria, Damascus Citadel has been instrumental in defending against the Crusaders and preventing them from ever invading Damascus.
